The eight-speed automatic transmission will remain, and as before front-wheel drive will be standard with AWD optional. This new motor makes 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, which is only 6 hp shy of the discontinued V6 and a gain in torque of 7 lb-ft. The single biggest change for 2024 is under the hood, where a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will replace both former engines. In that first model year, Atlas sales outpaced the previous decade of U.S.-model Touareg production combined. The German automaker’s first SUV developed specifically for North American tastes, the Atlas replaced the pricey, slow-selling semi-premium Touareg for 2018, and the automaker clearly got the recipe right. While Atlas sales were down in 2022 like many other vehicles, the SUV has been a big success for Volkswagen. Now it’s giving both vehicles a makeover for 2024, with updated interiors and tech features, a new engine and lightly updated styling. The automaker expanded the Atlas line with the sportier-looking two-row Cross Sport, something of a budget Audi Q8 alternative, in 2020. With its huge third row and amazing space efficiency, the Volkswagen Atlas has been one of our favorite three-row family SUVs ever since it was introduced in 2017. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas (right) and Atlas Cross Sport get new wheels and restyled front and rear ends, but the biggest changes are underneath, with a new engine, an updated interior and lots of newly standard features.
